2025 Marks the Cloud Institute’s 30th Anniversary!

The Cloud Institute Turns 30! 🎉

2025 marks 30 years of The Cloud Institute inspiring and equipping educators to shape a sustainable future! We’re celebrating with new professional learning experiences, game-changing curriculum collaborations, and the release of my book, Response-able. The work is expanding at an incredible pace - more schools, more communities, and more young people are stepping up to lead the shift toward sustainability. I’m grateful for our brilliant team, our trusted partners, and the momentum we’ve built together. Here’s to the next 30 years!

We will be celebrating all year with Professional Learning, Coaching and Keynotes, Micro-credentials, Micro-Learning Modules with the International Baccalaureate, a new Game with “positive sum rules” and a new vertically articulated K-8 Curriculum Series with Oxford International Curriculum. So much to be grateful for!

Highlights include:

  • We are still here!

  • My new book will be published this year entitled, Response-able

  • The speed and scale of the work is accelerating

  • I spend more time these days on how to educate for Sustainability then on why

  • I have increased our capacity with a small and mighty team of amazing educators that I trust to implement our work in schools and communities with integrity, and

  • More and more schools and communities are working together and recognizing the power and promise of young people to participate in, and to lead with us, the shift toward Sustainability.

In 1987,  I read the “Our Common Future Report” published by the Brundtland Commission. It was the first international report to use the term, “Sustainable Development”.

In 1992 there was a U.N. Summit in Rio de Janeiro at which 174 countries signed Agenda 21, a global social contract, a promise to each other that we would work individually and collectively toward a sustainable future.

In 1995, I founded The Cloud Institute for Sustainability Education thinking I was late to the party.  I was early.  The Internet barely existed at that time, so I didn’t know it. I thought it would take 3-5 years for the idea of Education for Sustainability (an obviously good idea if you want to move toward Sustain-ability) to take hold.

38 years since the Report, and 30 years since I founded the Cloud Institute and Co-founded the field of Education for Sustainability, we have made progress in terms of increased awareness, progress in terms of market demand, and progress measured by some of the indicators of  Sustainability.  We still have a long, long way to go to make the course corrections we need to make in order to thrive over time on Spaceship Earth.

I am proud of what we have been able to accomplish.  For the next 30 years we will be focused on continually improving our results and on increasing the speed and scale of our reach. The ways of knowing and the kinds of thinking required to make Sustain-ability and Regeneration the predominant way of being and doing in the World must be adopted faster and, in more places, if they are going to be “the difference that makes the difference” (Bateson).

Let us know when you are ready to join the growing number of schools, districts and communities that are educating for a healthy, just and sustainable future.

With love,

Jaimie
